Vintage Bead Jewels
..About the Vintage Lucite & Glass Beads in my creations..
Lucite beads were created in the 1930's by the Canadian Company Du Pont, as a cheaper alternative to using Bakelite & Catalin to make jewellery. In the 1950's Lucite Jewellery became increasingly popular after the release of the Jelly Belly range of Jewellery, as it was favoured amongst the Hollywood glamour set.
Lucite beads are mostly carved out of tubes of Lucite which produces a seamless bead, unlike many other plastic or glass beads. They look and feel like glass but are lighter. The beads I buy were created between 1940 and 1980. When I see Lucite beads I love, I must buy them, as I know they are in short supply..... unless as it has happened before, someone stumbles upon a warehouse full of these beads....!
I also use Czech Glass Beads that have been recreated using bead molds from the 1920's and 1950's - I love their bellflowers and melon beads and the colours are timeless.
Creating jewellery with these beads takes me back to when I was about 6 years old, playing in my Grandmothers jewellery box full of war time jewellery.
